Course Description:

The 32-Hour Rigging Supervisor Course is designed to meet the requirements of the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) for individuals supervising rigging operations. This in-depth course provides experienced workers with the skills and regulatory knowledge necessary to oversee hoisting and rigging activities safely and in compliance with NYC Construction Codes and OSHA standards.

Participants will learn how to read and interpret rigging plans, conduct site safety assessments, inspect rigging equipment, and manage crews performing hoisting operations. The course combines classroom instruction with practical exercises to ensure supervisors are well-prepared to identify hazards, communicate effectively with workers, and implement corrective measures when needed.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a wallet card and certificate of completion, recognized by the NYC DOB for licensing and compliance purposes.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Interpret and apply NYC Construction Codes and OSHA regulations related to rigging operations.
  • Identify different types of hoisting equipment, rigging hardware, and their proper uses.
  • Calculate load weights, center of gravity, sling angles, and capacities.
  • Conduct pre-use equipment inspections and recognize signs of wear, damage, or defects.
  • Develop and evaluate site-specific rigging plans.
  • Supervise rigging operations, ensuring work is performed safely and within regulatory guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with workers, signalpersons, crane operators, and site safety personnel.
  • Recognize hazards associated with suspended loads, lifting practices, and environmental conditions.
  • Implement emergency procedures and stop-work authority when unsafe conditions are identified.
Course Materials: This course consists of several different components including a PowerPoint presentation, lecture, case studies, class discussions and hands on demonstrations. We will provide a student manual which will include all relevant written standards

The 32-Hour Rigging Supervisor Course encompasses a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for supervising rigging operations safely and in compliance with regulations. Key topics include:
  • Overview of NYC Building Code, OSHA 1926 Subpart CC, and applicable safety standards
  • Types of rigging equipment, components, and hardware
  • Load weight estimation, center of gravity calculations, and sling angle considerations
  • Proper selection, inspection, and rejection criteria for rigging gear
  • Site safety planning and rigging operations coordination
  • Common rigging hazards and accident prevention strategies
  • Communication techniques including standard hand signals and radio use
  • Emergency response procedures during rigging operations
  • Roles and responsibilities of a Rigging Supervisor under NYC regulations

Prerequisites:

  • Language Proficiency: Students must be able to communicate effectively in the language in which the course is conducted. ​
  • Identification: A valid photo ID is required for course registration. ​
  • Educational Background: There are no formal educational prerequisites. However, participants should possess basic literacy and numeracy skills to engage with course materials effectively. ​
  • Alternative Certification: In lieu of completing this course, individuals may possess a Department-approved national rigging certification, such as the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) Rigger Level II and Signalperson certifications. ​
